Update 2/22/99
SB 26 - About the Bill

___________

Update 2/16/99
We Need to Focus on Nevada SB 26

The crimes against the 34 estray horses were unthinkable & unbearable to me & millions of people. The criminals who killed the estray horses must be punished under the maximum penalty that our current laws allow.

However, we must remember that "these three" (
Anthony Jon Merlino, 20; Brendle & Scott William Brendle, 21; and Darien Thomas Brock, 20) are still suspects, have been arraigned & will be eventually tried to determine their innocence or guilt under our justice system. The preliminary hearings are set for May 19, 20 & 21, 1999 in Virginia City. I know that our justice system is not perfect, but it is the best we have that is civilized. I am certain that once we learn of all the evidence through the pre-trial & trial processes, we, as individuals, we will be able to make our own determination of "these three's" innocence or guilt, too.

We need to focus on a Nevada SB (Senate Bill) 26 that is being introduced by NV Senator Dina Titus (D-L.V.) and being supported by other legislators that will not only increase the penalties for cruelties to our furry friends, but make it a FELONY to kill a wild horse. It also includes making it unlawful for the cruel "Tripping" of our equine friends for sport or entertainment.

Let the Nevada legislators know that you support this bill (SB 26) and that this is finally "THE 1999 NEVADA LEGISLATIVE SESSION" for passage of SB 26, but it must include language that will cover the "estray" wild horses & livestock and domestic horses, too.

How to Contact Senator Dina Titus (D)

However, the language of the bill, regarding a FELONY penalty, relates to wild horses on PUBLIC LANDS (BLM), but does not include the "estray" horses, such as the Virginia Range wild horses, that were slaughtered over the Christmas holidays. The language needs to be clarified specifically that the felony penalty includes "estray" horses on both public & private lands. Even inclusion of livestock, including domestic horses, is being considered, as I understand, & this is good.

There is absolutely NO excuse for anyone to think that such horrendous crimes against these 34 wild horses or any other furry creature is okay and that they can get away with it. I still remember the helplessness I saw in the innocent eyes of the little filly that was critically wounded in her back, but still alive on that Sunday afternoon. Let's not let these Virginia Range wild horses die in vain.
