November 23, 1994. Wild Horse Spirit Ltd. received a telephone call from a man that worked at the Cabin-In-The-Sky restaurant near Virginia City. He was concerned that the "cats" would get a young horse that was all alone. The horse trailer was hooked up to the pickup and the two of us drove up the road to the restaurant to find the horse. It was indeed "right and perfect" because we found her standing alone like she was waiting for us. We gently roped her and she fell flat when she tried to jolt away. She was so dehydrated, weak and shocky that it took both of us to lift her up out of the sagebrush. We managed to get her into the trailer.

She was only three or four weeks old and had been fending for herself. Infection was evident on her hind quarters as she had been attacked by a canine, likely a coyote. She needed medical attention right away.
We drove to the vet in Reno. IVs and antibiotics were started by the vet. She was put on a diet of foal-Lac milk. She would not have lasted another day on her own.

That year we spent the Thanksgiving Holidays at the vet with her. Later, when she regained some of her strength, she was moved to the Wild Horse Spirit Ltd facility. For a while, she had a great deal of difficulty walking.

Skye at seven months with people friends.

Now she is a free thinking three and a half year old bay who enjoys running. She is our "sky spirit". Skye is an estray wild horse from the Virginia Range Mountains.

The Virginia Range wild horses were the horses that spurred Velma Johnson, "Wild Horse Annie" on her long crusade to protect these creatures. The Federal Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act of 1971 was passed into law as a result of Velma Johnson's hard work. Unfortunately, there is no protection for wild horses that wander off federal land. The "estray" horse has not learned about property lines and is excluded from protection under the federal law.
