Research indicates that there is a link between animal abuse and child abuse and that animal abuse is related to increased potential for teen violence. Presentations are being made to child and adolescent groups, parents, school professionals and other specific youth organizations. The crusade utilizes live animals accompanying MCAH member/speakers. The animals bring their own riveting experiences about cruelty, abandonment, and escapes from death. We recognize that as a prevention program, we will never have statistics to support the reduced incidence of violence. MCAH has worked specifically to integrate this campaign with current existing programs. Replication in other counties could be quite successful based on the simple model Sierra County has developed. This program can be tailored to fit the differences and needs of other communities (i.e. urban, greater population, special needs classes, increased access to funding, etc.) We are working to educate that reporting can save lives. Evaluation tools from the students and teachers affirm the significance of our messages. The presenters learn as much if not more from each of their audiences. The fact that this program can enrich and be enriched at the same time is indicative of its success. |
