WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Jim Gibbons, (R-Nevada), a member of the House Resources Committee, announced today he has received information that the House Resources Committee on National Parks and Public Lands has scheduled an oversight field hearing in Reno, Nevada to discuss the Wild Horse and Burro Act.

The hearing will be held JUNE 5, 1998 AT 2:00P.M. (Pacific Coast Time) IN THE WASHOE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CHAMBER AT 1001 E. 9TH STREET - BUILDING A, RENO, NEVADA.

This hearing will focus on range issues and problems with the Wild Horse and Burro Act and its implementation. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) faces numerous challenges as it tries to manage feral horses and burros on the public lands. These include - overpopulation, disease, habitat destruction, degradation of riparian areas, competition with other domesticated animals on the range such as sheep and cattle, and competition with wildlife. This hearing will provide an opportunity for environmentalists, state and local government officials, and concerned citizens to present their ideas on how to improve management of feral horses and burros while protecting our public lands.
