The horse owners of Washoe County turned out in force Tuesday, May 12, 1998 to demand that
the resolution severly limiting the number of horses and other animals be voted down -
then and there. |
|
Between 700 to 800 people turned out to let the Washoe County Board of Commissioners know
that they would not tolerate the county coming in and demanding that the property owners
reduce the number of horses and other animals. The resolution if passed would have reduced
the number of horses in Washoe County backyards by 30% to 40%. The effect on the local
county businesses would have been severe. From horseshoers to feedstores to vets, the
ripple effect would have spread through the local economy. |

From children to businesswomen to horseshoers to stable owners to people without horses,
voices from all over the county were heard. In the end it came down to the fact that
LIMITING ANIMALS WOULD NOT STOP ABUSE AND NEGLECT. |
|
Instead, the county voted no. They also recommended that the board set up a
committee to resolve the problems and recommend changes in the laws to make it easier to
deal with neglect cases and prank/harassment problems. |
The horse people there decided to set up a non-profit group to police horse owners
themselves. A meeting on Wednesday, May 20th, at the Round Table Pizza in Golden Valley at
6:30 p.m. will be the site of a meeting to set this group up. Anyone interested in Washoe
County's committee should contact Michael Harper, the county's planning commissioner.
