Trial of three suspects accused of killing 34 wild horses in Virginia Range Not to be Appealed

Merlino Brendle Brock

March 20, 2000 - A call to Storey County District Attorney’s office confirmed that Sharon Claussen, Storey County Deputy District Attorney, stated Storey County will not appeal District Judge Michael Griffin’s ruling of 3-9-2000 against the three former high school friends, Merlino, Brock and Brendle, two of which are now ex-Marines, accused of shooting 34 wild horses during 1998 Christmas holidays east of Reno/Sparks, Nevada. All charges were dropped against the suspects except for wild horse #12.

The suspects’ own admissions to investigating officers regarding the shootings were the only links to the case. No ballistic evidence could link any of the men’s guns to the shell casings found at the scenes.

April 17, 2000 is the scheduled trial date against the three suspects for #12 wild horse, a misdemeanor charge.
