HELP MOVE HORSES IN IOWA

Forwarded from Darlene Krauss - Wheatland, IA
We live in Wheatland, Iowa, just off the Wapsipinicon River.  We have 16 horses and are greatly concerned that we can find temporary places to keep our horses as there is a great threat in the next 24 to 48 hours that our entire ranch will be under water.

Is there a group (EARS) in IA that helps to locate temporary homes for horses?  We have contacted the local humane society and we came up with the idea of a local (40 miles away) are fair grounds but unfortunately they are having a huge horse show this coming weekend and can not take us in.  The farmers here have mostly dry lots for their cows and no pasture as it is all planted.  And one of our other problems is that we have stallions, a injured rehabilitating horse and a mare due to foal anytime, so we need box stalls.

Any assistance you could give me for locating someone on my side of the state who may be able to help would be greatly appreciated as the river upstream in Independence/Anamosa was rising a foot an hour yesterday and they have broken the record for their high.

Thank you

May 18th Update
Hi Dee...thanks for contacting me. I have found a place to take 2 box stalled horses and 6 of my pasture horses. However, I still have 7 stalled horses I need to place (2 stallions, a mare due to foal anytime, a convalescing horse and 3 young horses that have never been turned out with others or overnight (one is recently gelded).

At this point we are still ok. The river is rising slowly but we expect that to change sometime in the early am on thursday when the big flash flooding of water gets here from up north. So we are hoping to get the rest of the horses placed tomorrow or at the very very latest Friday morning.

I'll let you know more if we get contacted by anyone...and thanks much for those prayers!
Darlene

I received a note from UAN about the flood. I have sent out note to the IOWA office of emergency management, friends and people with lots of contacts. I am sending prayers that you get some  answers and help soon. Are you and the animals OK?
