If you think your Horse Has Laminitis -
FOUNDER - Call Your Vet

by Shirley Sepulveda

You go out to feed your horse. You see him standing with his front legs out in front of him and most of his weight on his hind legs. He continues to stand that way while you put his breakfast in his manger. He slowly pivots towards you and can hardly walk on his front legs.

You check him for injuries and find none. Call your vet immediately.

If he has laminitis (founder) it is crucial that you seek medical help for your horse right away. The veterinary world has come a long way in new and innovative treatments for laminitis. But your vet must be able to treat it immediately for the best results.

Horses can founder from being to fat, stress, drugs, too much water, too much grain, and improper shoeing.

As with colic symptoms, it is wise to check with your vet before the situation calls for it. When your vet is out be sure to ask him about your horses weight and condition. If your horse is too fat, have him advise you on what to do and what to watch for.
