                        By Val Glatthar

Spring officially starts in a few more days, and with the changing of the seasons a few other big events are just around the corner. Mother's Day, another birthday that I don't wish to celebrate and an anniversary or two. But that's another story save for some other time!
My husband has asked on more than one occasion what would I like...well this year when the question comes up I have prepared an answer. He always asks sometime during the year "Would you like a diamond ring or a custom made belt buckle or perhaps something else of equal value? I've been thinking "a tennis bracelet pehaps" but since I don't play tennis I dont think I'll pick that. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, right? Not even close!

"Horses allow us to dream and fantasize,
to be a part of a world
that only exists in our own mind!"

This is the part where my city friends shake their heads and say pick the jewelry but the little voice in my head says, " it's just a bauble pick something that breathes."Can you guess where this I going? How many times have you heard that dogs are a man's best friend? Well, horses are a girl's best friend. Why, you may ask? Let's think about this, throughout time horses have been a romantic symbol.

I know I love to be romanced even just a little. And say, what color was the steed your white knight rode up on? Well, mine was white, purely coincidental (actually it was a white CJ-5 with a red interior) !!
See, romance and a horse are seldom far from one another. Horses are a part of legend, mythology, stories from the round table and tales of the old west. Horses allow us to dream and fantasize, to be a part of a world that only exists in our own mind. Horses can save us from lonely days and sad events with just a look, a nuzzle or a touch of a velvet muzzle.

"Horses teach us truthfulness and respect."

Horses respond to our care, they teach us truthfulness and respect. Indeed, we must respect their abilities, size and power plus the sheer amount of organic material they can produce. We deal with them honestly there's no cheating or sneaking on them or down you'll go. Don't you hate it when that happens?
Many of these qualities are the qualities of my dear friends except that my horse friend can take me places much quicker and with such ease. My equine friend always listens and knows my moods, and he responds to my up days, my down moments and he can truly sense my delight in feeling the wind in my hair and the warmth of the sun on my face.
I love his smell on those sweaty days and don't mind even the biggest of horse smoogies. He's always grateful for his meals and loves the little cookies he gets for snacks. He never complains if he gets the same thing for dinner each night or even the same for breakfast each morning. So, I would have to argue that a horse is a girl's best friend though diamonds are awfully nice. I'll take the big grey one.
