PMU FOALS TAKE CENTER STAGE AT DRAFT HORSE CLASSIC THIS FRIDAY (SEPTEMBER 15)

For the first time ever, the annual Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley, California, will recognize the plight of the Premarin horses by featuring a class for rescued Premarin foals. The event features draft horses from throughout the United States and organizers have agreed to hold a special class for Premarin foals on Friday morning (September 15).

Participants will include several rescued foals adopted by members of United
Animal Nations. UAN President Jeane Westin and UAN Board Member Cara Huff (who has herself adopted a Premarin foal) will be on hand to present the first-place trophy. The event will be a great opportunity to educate the
public -- and draft horses lovers! -- about the Premarin issue. For anyone
who lives in the area, the Premarin foal class takes place at 10:00 a.m. at
the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. UAN will also hold a press
conference following the event, at 1:30 p.m., at the entrance to the
fairgrounds. For more info, email UAN at info@uan.org

2000 PREMARIN FOAL RESCUE BRINGS BACK 200 BABIES AND FIRST-EVER UAN PREMARIN MARE!

UAN member Allyn Carman has just returned from Winnipeg, Canada, where she helped Helen Meredith of United Pegasus Foundation with the rescue of 200 Premarin foals! All of these babies are now in transit to their new homes or will be heading to United Pegasus' sanctuary in Hemet (Southern California) where they will rest and wait to be adopted out. UAN members in Oregon, California, Colorado and Ohio are adopting 10 of these foals and are
anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new family members. A UAN member in Oregon also is adopting UAN's first-ever rescued Premarin mare. This mare (a draft-pinto mix who was being discarded by the PMU industry after years on the "pee line") is heading to Oregon with a foal she adopted at the auctions.

(Rescuers weren't sure what happened to her own foal but she's formed a new family with the foal that is traveling by her side!) Allyn says this mare is "pretty wild" (not used to any human TLC) but UAN member Cheryl who is adopting her is ready and waiting to give her and her adopted foal all the attention she needs. We'll have more on the 2000 Premarin rescue from Allyn (she's adopting one of the 2000 PMU foals herself, to join her two other PMU foals Hank and Hoss) and updates on the foals and the mare in future issues of PMULines. Also, look for a complete report and photos in the fall issues of our UAN Journal (mailed to UAN members). Anyone interested in adopting one of the "extra" Premarin foals can contact Helen Meredith at (626) 279-1306.

PREMARIN MAKER SUED FOR MONOPOLIZING MARKET, PRICE GOUGING AMERICAN WOMEN.

Premarin producer Wyeth Ayerst has been sued by rival Duramed (the maker of Cenestin, one of the cruelty-free alternatives to Premarin) for making unfair deals with managed health care organizations (sweetened with "rebates" and "administrative fees") so that women in these health plans only have one option for hormone replacement therapy (ie. Wyeth Ayerst's bitter pill - PREMARIN). The lawsuit, which was filed by Duramed on September 5, also alleges that Wyeth-Ayerst is so confident of its hold on the market that it has hiked the price of Premarin by 5 1/2 times the inflation level within one year (January 1999-January 2000).

More than 70 percent of Americans receive their prescription drugs through managed care organizations -- meaning 70 percent of American women on HRT aren't able to make the compassionate choice to say no to Premarin unless they opt out of their health plan and buy HRT on their own. Duramed's lawsuit is further proof that Wyeth Ayerst is plotting with the health care industry to keep American women "hooked" on Premarin and in the dark about the cruelty behind this drug. Duramed's attorney is a successful antitrust lawyer.

Here's hoping that they win their case -- for the PMU mares and foals! (For
