CHAT TONIGHT (WED): H.O.P.E. RALLY ON HORSE SLAUGHTER AND PREMARIN!
Organizers of the H.O.P.E. Rally on horse slaughter will be UAN's special
guests tonight (Wednesday, August 9) on our online chat tonight from
6:30-7:30 p.m. Pacific Time (9:30-10:30 p.m. East Coast time).
H.O.P.E. (Humane Organization for the Protection of Equines) organizers
Bunny and Roberta will be online to answers questions about the upcoming
rally, scheduled for September 18, in Washington, D.C. The goal of the rally
is to educate the American public about horse slaughter issues, including
the cruelty and abuse endured by tens of thousands of Premarin mares and
foals every year.

Horse lovers from across the U.S. are planning on attending the rally and a caravan of empty horse trailers, symbolizing the horses who have been lost to slaughter, is expected to arrive in D.C. that day. UAN is helping sponsor the event, which will take place at Lafayette Park, in Washington, D.C., but donations are still needed to pay for equipment costs. Rally organizers plan to show UAN's Premarin video, "Look Into Their Eyes," as well as play the theme song from our video.

Scheduled speakers include Susan Wagner of Equine Advocates and Cathleen Doyle of Save the Horses. To join the chat, go to www.uan.org and scroll down to the bottom of the page for the chat link. At the chat schedule page, click on the link for the chat and then type in your name and hit "connect." (Note: You do not need a password). Any questions, email Pam Runquist at UAN at info@uan.org. For those who miss the chat, you can find more information on the rally at http://hoperally.end-horse-slaughter.com. (The web site also includes information on how to buy raffle tickets or t-shirts to support the event.)
Or contact H.O.P.E., P.O. Box 59, Morris, CT 06763.

PARADE MAGAZINE FEATURES PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVES.

A recent issue of Parade Magazine featured a column by Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld which promotes the benefits of plant-based "estrogenlike" chemicals known as phytoestrogens as a safer alternative to hormone replacement drugs such as Premarin. The column notes that phytoestrogens, found in foods such as lentils, soybeans and chickpeas, are prominent in the diets in Asian countries, where women have few menopausal symptoms. Phytoestrogen supplements, such as Promensil, have been shown to reduce menopausal hot flashes without bleeding and to protect premenopausal women against bone loss to some extent.

To thank Parade and Dr. Rosenfeld for highlighting the benefits of plant-based, cruelty-free alternatives, go to www.parade.com and click on the email link for the editors.

PREMARIN: RX FOR DOGS??

Last year, UAN exposed the startling trend that more and more veterinarians in the United States were starting to prescribe Premarin for DOGS in order to treat incontinence, hair loss and other problems, after which we sent out information to all veterinary associations in the United States about the cruelty associated with this drug. Well, we recently heard from yet another UAN member whose veterinarian tried to prescribe Premarin for her dog and who had no idea where this drug came from or the abuse involved. She refused Premarin for her canine and got an alternate prescription, but only because she asked! If you'd like a copy of our Premarin brochure, Premarin: RX for Cruelty, to share with your veterinarian, just send an email to info@uan.org.

RESCUERS SET FOR ANNUAL TREK
TO SAVE PREMARIN FOALS

It's that time of year again. The Labor Day auctions are less than two weeks away and that means thousands of Premarin foals and some of the "worn-out" PMU mares being discarded by the industry are facing a horrifying journey to the auctions where many will be sold for slaughter.

United Animal Nations is once again teaming up with Helen Meredith of United Pegasus Foundation in Southern California to save some Premarin foals from slaughter. Helen will be buying foals for UAN members, as well as for several other groups and individuals throughout the United States, who have stepped forward to adopt a foal.

UAN's representative Allyn Carman (who last year adopted two Premarin foals, Hank and Hoss) will be accompanying Helen this Labor Day to help with handling the foals. Also, for the first time ever, UAN will be sponsoring
the rescue of a Premarin mare (with her foal if possible) from the Canadian
auctions. A UAN member in Oregon has made the commitment to provide a loving home for one of the mares and her foal, and Helen and Allyn will be looking for one of the "worn out" mares that is being discarded by the industry after years and years on the PMU line. Other rescue groups throughout the United States also are readying for the trek to the auctions, such as GFW Equine Rescue in Georgia which plans to save 200 foals, and groups in Canada will also step forward to save some foals (ie. TRACS out of British Columbia). A full report on UAN's Premarin foal and mare rescue will be upcoming in a future issue of PMULines.

FDA APPROVES PLANT-BASED HORMONE PATCH
FOR FIGHTING OSTEOPOROSIS

Another cruelty-free alternative is now available! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on August 18 that it had approved a plant-based estrogen patch for use in preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The hormone patch (Novogyne Pharmaceuticals' Vivelle) was already approved for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and can now be prescribed for prevention of osteoporosis. (The patch delivers estradiol, one of the plant-based alternatives to Premarin, through the skin.) Osteoporosis is a major concern of many menopausal and postmenopausal women and this announcement gives them one more cruelty-free option to consider! For more on this story and other plant-based alternatives to Premarin, go to www.healthcentral.com and enter "menopause" and "natural" as keywords for a search of the site.

TRUTH IN LABELING: PETITION TO FDA
ON PREMARIN PACKAGING

UAN has already collected signatures from more than 8,000 American women (as well as many compassionate men!) urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to require that all packaging for Premarin and similar products be clearly labeled as containing estrogens derived from horse urine. (Currently, only the inserts given to physicians include detailed information as to the source of Premarin).

We've just sent out another mailing on this petition and will be collecting signatures until the end of October. If you'd like to sign on, send an email to info@uan.org with your address and we'll send you a petition card to sign. (Also, let us know if you'd like extra petition cards to share with friends and colleagues!) Women have a right to know the truth about Premarin, even if their doctors won't tell them!

DON'T FORGET THE UPCOMING H.O.P.E. RALLY ON HORSE SLAUGHTER (SEPT. 18).

The Humane Organization for the Protection of Equines will be hosting a rally to educate the public about the horrors of horse slaughter on Sept. 18 in Washington, D.C. Horse lovers from across the U.S. will be caravaning to D.C. for the event. For more information and to network with other rally participants, go to http://hoperally.end-horse-slaughter.com. UAN is helping sponsor the event and UAN's Premarin video, "Look Into Their Eyes," will be shown during the rally. For more information on or to order UAN's Premarin video, go to www.uan.org and scroll to the bottom of the page for the Premarin video link.
