BRING ON THE INFORMATION AGE!
It doesn’t take a lavish budget to computerize information vital to the
mitigation of all kinds of emergencies and put it where it’s really
needed—on board front-line apparatus and in the hands of incident
commanders. Morgantown (W.Va.) Fire Department shows how it’s done. By David

FLORIDA FIRESTORMS
The worst fires in Florida’s history brought a massive mobilization of
forces into the state during June and July. How did the state get the
equipment and manpower it needed to battle more than 2,200 fires? An
interview with the man in charge of logistics at the Emergency Operations
Center offers valuable insight for the next Big One.

Innovations:

FIRE-STOPPING SLIME
The same polyacrylates that make today’s baby diapers so effective at
drawing moisture away from babies’ bottoms have been reformulated in Class A
fire retardant gels that stick water where firefighters need it—and keep it
there for hours. Put to the test against the fires that raged across Flagler
County, Fla., in July, the new goos promise to be a superior weapon for
protecting homes and structures threatened by wildfires.
